How usable this website is, what we've aimed for, and what we haven't yet checked.
Draft — not yet in force
This policy is a working draft. It still needs the council's contact details and formal approval before the courts open to the public, and it has not been reviewed by a solicitor. Don't rely on it as it stands.
What we're aiming for
We want everyone in Haxby to be able to book a court, including people who use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, or need larger text. The target is WCAG 2.1 level AA.
Where we've got to
Being straight with you: this site has not yet been formally audited, so we can't claim it meets that standard. Saying otherwise would be worth nothing to you if it turned out to be untrue. An audit is planned before the courts open to the public, and this page will be updated with the honest result — including anything that fails.
The site has been built to:
- work with the keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline;
- use real headings, labels and landmarks that screen readers can follow;
- keep text large enough and contrast strong enough to read outdoors on a phone;
- reflow down to a small screen without horizontal scrolling;
- avoid relying on colour alone to tell you something.
Known gaps
- The availability grid is a dense table of times. It works with a keyboard, but it hasn't been tested end-to-end with a screen reader.
- The booking flow hasn't been tested with voice control or magnification software.
- Photographs added by users have generic descriptions — we can't know what's in someone's photo.
If you can't use part of this site
Tell us at [email address — to be confirmed by Haxby Town Council] and we'll fix it. If you need to book a court and the website is in your way, contact the council and someone will make the booking for you — you shouldn't lose a court because our site let you down.
If you're not happy with our response, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) at equalityadvisoryservice.com.
